Exclamation trouble mounting NEC DVD +/-RW

I have a NEC ND-1300A 4x DVD writer and I can't get the device to mount. It's detected on boot at /dev/hdd, but trying to mount it using mount -t udf and mount -t 9660 only returns this

mount: block device /dev/hdd is write-protected, mounting read-only
mount: No medium found

I can't access the drive at all at the moment, I insert a disk and all it does is spin up the disk. Oddly enough I can hear this through my speakers as well as a loud screeching noise.

/dev/dvd points to /dev/hdc, but that's only a Lite-On 52x CD-RW, not a DVD-ROM as well...any help would be appreciated, thanks.
