Trouble installing hp scanjet 5470c backend on Redhat 9.0

Hi,
I have been trying to get my scanner running properly for quite some time now.
It is a hp scanjet 5470 c. And the machine is running on Redhat 9.0.

After checking sane's homepage I downloaded the relevant backend

hp5400-20030526.tar.gz.

I also installed the version of the sane backend advised by the above (sane-backends-1.0.12). The sane installation goes through fine and so does make
on the hp stuff. But finally when I run make install (for the hp backend) I get

rm -f /usr/local/lib/sane/libsane-hp5400.so.1
ln `pwd`/sane-hp5400.so /usr/local/lib/sane/libsane-hp5400.so.1
ln: creating hard link `/usr/local/lib/sane/libsane-hp5400.so.1' to `/home1/ravi/hp5400/sane-hp5400.so': Invalid cross-device link
make: *** [install] Error 1

Running sane-find-scanner doesn't detect the scanner (which incidentally is connected to the parallel port).

Any ideas ??

Ravi
