Trouble getting PS2 mouse to work in Mandrake 9.1
Hey all
I am working on an install of Mandrake 9.1. Install from scratch.
System is (my slow old beater learn linux beast):
Intel Advanced/ATX (gateway) mobo. bios 1.00.03.cnot
Pentium 200 O.D. MMX processor
128mb edo ram
3com Etherlink III 509B ISA network card
Creative Labs Vibro ISA sound card
ATI Mach64 CT 16 bit video card
OHCI/EHCI Asus chipset USB2.0 card
USR Hardware Modem
Lite-on 12101B CDRW
WD 20gb drive
Plain 'ole M$ 2-button PS2 mouse. I have also tried a few of my other standard generic PS2 mice.
Mouse works great with the floppy linux boot floppy install disk (bios won't boot from cd right.) Works great with other OSes. Doesn't work when I boot into XFree graphical interface, KDE, or other graphical environments.
Tried mouseconfig from the command line, but to no avail. I get the feeling that there is something wrong somewhere, but can't get it.
Reloading the system again is *not* the solution -- this is try #4 now.
Thanks for the help
Best regards
John

Running RedHat here...So I am not sure the configuration files for X are stored in the same place(/etc/X11/).
Check to make sure there are sections in XF86Config and XF86Config-4 something like this:
XF86Config:
# Pointer section
###############
Section "Pointer"
Protocol "PS/2"
Device "/dev/psaux" #this may be different on Mandrake
Emulate3Buttons
Emulate3Timeout 50
EndSection
###############
and in XF86Config-4:
###############
Section "Input Device"
Identifier "Mouse0"
Driver "mouse"
Option "Protocol" "PS/2"
Option "Device" "/dev/psaux"# maybe different with Mandrake
Option "Emulate3Buttons" "yes"
EndSection
###############
You could try replacing PS/2 with IMPS/2, this worked for me with my MS mouse

followup
I wanted to follow up on the first post... last night I did some more checking with it.
old intel advanced/atx "thor" mobo w/isa sound and isa ethernet card....
Anyway, when I turned the plug and play off in the bios, the mouse went back to work, but I had IRQ conflicts with some of the devices.
Turns out that the crummy old pos Mobo does not have enough IRQ addresses to handle mouse, keyboard, 2 serial, parallel, 3 pci cards, and 2 isa cards. I was one IRQ short.
So... now I have the serial and parallel ports disabled, and that freed up enough addresses for the cards.
Now back to figuring out how to get the modem, sound, and the usb root host controllers to configure right.
Best regards
John
