Having trouble installing a piece of hardware? Want to know if that peripheral is compatible with Linux?

transferring a drive to a new machine

hiya

I have an old machine with a slackware installed on a new hard drive, being used as a server. I want to take this drive and put it in a new, fast and shiny machine.

My plan is:
1. take hard drive out of old machine
2. plug in to new machine (as the one and only drive)
3. switch on

Is there a flaw in my plan?

The only problem I can see is the x config file you might have to boot up from a removable media and edit the file. There should be some or you could login to the command line.

cool. It's purely a server, so no x or even video drivers to worry about, as I only use it via ssh/svn/postgres over the lan

I have done something similar. I installed Fedora7Test1 on an older P3 550MHz box
then pulled out the drive and installed it in a AMD 2.4 GHz ran it for a while then reinstalled it back into the P3 box in March and have been running it successfully and updating it so it is now F7T4.
