Transferring a Bootable Rescue Floppy onto an USB-Stick
 

Hi everybody,

Having a well working rescue and special backup system on a boot floopy I want to transfer it onto a bootable USB-Stick (FAT formatted) since some of the maintained machines meanwhile are floppy-less ones.

I have already managed to transfer the system files and the boot sector. Its an older minimal linux system from 2001 (don't know the precise version) but it boots well from the USB stick using an initial RAM-Disk. The system itself and its scripts are still unmodified! Now one of the scripts tries to backup some configuration files on a second floppy and tries to mount /dev/fd0 under /mnt/floppy after prompting to insert a new disk. Since there is no more floppy on the new machines this causes an error and I have to redirect it to save directly onto the stick.

If possible, I try to avoid recompiling the kernel using all this usb driver stuff, ideally just changing the mount command in the script. My thougt is that since the stick is recognized as a boot device by the bios, the kernel has to be aware of it in some way - perhaps a virtual floppy drive? Is there an easy way to access the boot medium? How can I find out the device name ?
