Touchscreen with no X-server

I'm looking for a way to make a touchscreen to operate under shell only terminal.
With gpm it acts like a touchpad mouse - i.e. it moves cursor and a single touch acts like a click at the cursor position.
But I need it to work similar to a touchdevice - i.e. a touch is a 'click' at the coordinate of the touch.
I couldn't find any info if gpm can be tweeked to act the way I want it to.
Any suggestions on how to do that?

A web search for "configure linux touchscreen" turns up a number of articles, but after a cursory look, it seems to me that none of them will work without some sort of GUI interface.
