Touchscreen + eGalax + Ubuntu 9.10 = fail?

Hi All! Long time reader, first time poster. Lots of great information on this site!

I have a generic HAMI H104 T touchscreen that I'm trying to get to work with Ubuntu 9.10.

I've been trying to get the eGalax touchscreen driver to work:

http://210.64.17.162/web20/eGalaxTouchDriver/linuxDriver.htm.

The instructions that are included with it are somewhat confusing and I can't tell what it is I'm supposed to do. I've found a bunch of Web sites addressing the issue but none of them seem to describe my exact problem in its entirety. One of the closest is this, and I have that exact same problem with Setup.sh.

The problem is, that guy's using Fedora and I'm not. It's my impression that xorg.conf has been taken out of Ubuntu 9.10? So what else should I try?

I'm also not entirely sure what else I'm supposed to do. It seems there are two steps: compiling the driver (kernel module?!) and then adding some configuration information to the OS. Other than that I'm pretty lost. I'm not at all new to computers, but Linux hardware installs are just something I'm not familiar with!

Thank you all very kindly,

Dave.

Ok, I figured it out! Just because I know someone else will go through this:

Gentlemen, the touchscreen is working!

In case it comes up on Jeopardy later, here's how I did it:

Download the eGalaxTouch driver from http://home.eeti.com.tw/web20/egalax...nuxDriver.html

Install and unpack.

Now this was the tricky part: in Ubuntu 9.10 the xorg.conf file has been deprecated in favor of a more XML-type configuration. BUT, that doesn't mean it doesn't still work! So, add an empty xorg.conf to /etc/X11

Then browse to the eGalaxTouch32 directory you just unpacked and run sudo sh setup.sh .

Choose "3" for USB. If you've done everything right, the system should now ask you to restart. Once you do, again browse to the eGalaxTouch32 directory and run ./eGalaxTouch.

This should bring up the configuration menu, and Bob's yer uncle!
