Angry Touchpad stopped working!!!

Hi all,

I use an Excel Laptop (Local product of Australia) with Redhat 9

My Touchpad was working fine till now (even with different Distros...slack, mandrake and RedHat)..I also would use an USB mouse on the fly some times....no problems at all..

Suddenly out of the blue my Touchpad stopped working!!

Heres the dmesg output

I got it working when i installed the proper synaptics driver for it..

I dont know what had happened initially though...

You can find the driver here : http://w1.894.telia.com/~u89404340/t....html#Download

It also has a FAQ for easy install...

I highly recommend use this driver to correct your touchpad .....

Cheers

G'day M8, hot enough for ya?

I use kernel-2.6.x on my laptop, it has native support for synaptics touchpads.

Code:
# Input Device Drivers

CONFIG_MOUSE_PS2=m
CONFIG_MOUSE_PS2_SYNAPTICS=y
This is the "InputDevice" section from my XF86Config (three button USB optical + touchpad),
Code:
Section "InputDevice"

    Identifier	"Mouse1"
    Driver	"mouse"
    Option "Protocol" "IMPS/2"
    Option "Device" "/dev/input/mice"
    Option "ZAxisMapping" "4 5"
    Option "Resolution"	"256"

EndSection

Section "InputDevice"
     Driver "synaptics"
     Identifier "Mouse2"
     Option "Device" "/dev/psaux"
     Option "Protocol" "auto-dev"
     Option "LeftEdge" "1900"
     Option "RightEdge" "5400"
     Option "TopEdge" "1900"
     Option "BottomEdge" "4000"
     Option "FingerLow" "25"
     Option "FingerHigh" "30"
     Option "MaxTapTime" "180"
     Option "MaxTapMove" "220"
     Option "VertScrollDelta" "100"
     Option "MinSpeed" "0.02"
     Option "MaxSpeed" "0.18"

     Option "SHMConfig" "on"
     Option "Repeater" "/dev/ps2mouse"
EndSection
and the "ServerLayout" section,

Hey all,

Hope this is on-topic...

I also have synaptics to drive my mousepad (Topline Amicus laptop), but since I installed it, I can not simultaneously use the (PS/2?) mouse anymore. It's the type of mouse plugged in with a round 6-pins plug (PS/2 type?).

I compiled the 2.6.3 kernel with module support for serio and parkbd (and have them loaded). Running Sack 9.1.

When it's plugged in at startup it's recognised and working well, but only if I enable both the 'normal settings' and the 'synaptics settings' in Xfree86config. However, the mousepad doesn't 'tap' or scroll.

When only the synaptics drivers are enabled, X starts with a white-as-hell screen and hangs (with extra mouse plugged in).

Anyone knows how to configure XFree86 to have two functional mice at the same time?

AUSSI: I have never seen that CONFIG_PS"_SYNAPTICS in .config?! Did I miss anything in 2.6.3? I now have the drivers installed from the synaptics homepage.

I'll post XFree86.config later when I'm at my laptop. (and have another look at .config for the synaptics support)

[EDIT] snaps from XFree86.config:

Option "MaxSpeed" "0.18"
Option "AccelFactor" "0.0010"
# Option "Repeater" "/dev/ps2mouse"
# Option "EmulateMidButtonTime" "75"
EndSection
AUSSI:
I seem to have no such option CONFIG_PS2_SYNAPTICS... any idea why not, and would I need it?
Code:
bash-2.05b$ cd /usr/src/linux
bash-2.05b$ cat .config | grep -i SYNAPT
bash-2.05b$

Thanx, Leon.

This is what i see wrong in your XF86Config file...

I'm no expert in Hardware, but this might help!!!

1. You cant have more than one core pointer, if you want to use an external mouse also, you have to set all other mouse input devices to *AlwaysCore* and one to *CorePointer*, like i have set my Touchpad to *CorePointer* and my USB to *AlwaysCore*

2. This should be your Synaptics section

Section "InputDevice"
Identifier "Mouse[1]"

Driver "synaptics"
Option "Protocol" "auto-dev"
Option "Device" "/dev/psaux"
Option "LeftEdge" "1700"
Option "RightEdge" "5300"
Option "TopEdge" "1700"
Option "BottomEdge" "4200"
blah blah
EndSection

3. This should be your *ServerLayour* section

Section "ServerLayout"
blah blah
InputDevice "Mouse[1]" "AlwaysCore" #This is the Synaptics Touchpad
InputDevice "Keyboard0" "CoreKeyboard" #Keyboard
InputDevice "Mouse0" "CorePointer" #PS/2 Mouse
EndSection

One small advice : Always keep a backup of working XF86Config file, like rename it to XF86Config.backup before trying tricks with XF86

As i told earlier,i am no expert on hardware, it is best that someone (like Aussie) clarifies on this before you go ahead

Cheers

Thanx kingnothingzzz

After closely reading your and Aussies config file I learned that I should have two different names for the mice. It works well now.

Only thing is that I need to have the PS/2 mouse plugged in before boot, otherwise it won't work. If I remember correctly, in RH9 I could use it by just plugging it in. Would that still be possible?

Thanx, Leon.

I dont know about PS/2 mouse, I use an USB mouse....

On Redhat 9, it works fine when i plug it in on the fly...

If i am not wrong, you can get a PS/2 mouse working by plugging it in on the fly and doing a redhat-config-mouse later

cheers
