Touchpad problem

I am running openSuse 11.3 KDE and the touchpad is working but not able to access touchpad settings and management. Which I click on Touchpad I get warning: Touchpad configuration is not supported on this system. The synaptics driver is either not loaded or too old. I checked and I have synaptiks installed.

Any ideas?

It looks like this is a known problem with your hardware. See here: https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+s...ux/+bug/512192
Yes, that's a 'buntu site, but the problem refers to the kernel, which is pretty much the same across distros.

Don't worry if you do not understand all that's written there, because you'll get the idea

I have the same problem with my Sony VPCF11CSE, but I hate touchpads anyway, so disabled it and use a USB mouse instead.

In time, the kernel will, eventually, catch up with this new hardware, and recognise it properly. Unless someone has better advice, I recommend you be patient. At least it is working, if not "configurable".

Thanks for your help. How would I disable it? I keep hitting it by mistake and I agree a mouse would be easier to use.

Plug in a mouse, any USB mouse will do, it seems.

Then try this (as root, or you may receive errors)

modprobe -r psmouse

Is your touchpad now disabled?

Does your mouse still work?

If not, we'll have to go through some boring hardware and module probing to get this to work. So be patient.

I believe your problem to be solvable.
