Toshiba Sattelite ext usb modem problem (no serial port)
I have mandrake 9.1 on my Tosh Sattelite (P3) - 2 weeks now it's great but no good with built in modem. No serial port so tried a usb modem (Smart usb 56) no joy so downloaded drivers (slmdm-usb-2.04-00_mdk. i386.rpm. I cant get this to install via Konqueror. Any ideas ?

Open a terminal, Konsole, and as root:
rpm -Uvh slmdm-usb-2.04-00_mdk. i386.rpm And then post back what the error is... Cheers, Finegan |
Hi Finegan, thanks for getting back. details as follows:
error: open of slmdm-usb-2.04-00mdk. failed: No such file or directory error: open of i386.rpm failed: No such file or directory. BTW I can get a PCMCIA modem for my machine - is there any likelihood it would work better? Denzel |
Uh... there's a space in there I didn't mean to be in there man, between mdk. and .i386.rpm
Hmm... let's see if these drivers actually work, but yeah, there are a lot of supported pcmcia modems, check out pcmcia-cs.sourceforge.net for a full list of supported hardware. Some of this stuff is oooooold, but pcmcia modems aren't made much any longer. Cheers, Finegan |
Hey Finegan, thanks man I ll try again leaving out the offending space. Also will check out the PCMCIA route - my local backstreet pc shop sells em. Have a good day/night.
