Having trouble installing a piece of hardware? Want to know if that peripheral is compatible with Linux?

Unhappy Toshiba PCX 2500 USB Cable Modem

I have a friend who's M$ machine just bit the dust and he has made the jump to LINUX!!!! However, he has a Toshiba PCX 2500 USB Cable Modem and although the system recognizes the USB device in the information section (using Mandrake 9.2) of control panel, there seem to be no drivers for this device.

We were discussing purchasing a LinkSys or DLINK NIC card and plugging into the back of the modem instead of using USB, but we are not sure if this is a better solution or not. He is using TimeWarner as his cable modem provider.

I have scoured Google/Dogpile for help, but nothing seems to talk about this situation. Any help would be greatly appreciated.
