Tool to detect bad blocks....

I have a few hard drives that I believe have bad blocks. I know of the knoppix tool badblocks to detect them. Well. Then what ? The drive is still nearly unusable, as knoppix doesn't update the partition table or whatever it is on the drive that keeps track of the bad blocks. It's like taking your car to the mechanic and having him tell you, "Ya, it's busted." Well thanks, I already knew that. Now how do I fix it.

Is there any other data that would help some real hardware guru's help me ?

When I try to boot any pc that hard drive is the primary drive on, it just plain won't boot. When I put that drive in a box as hdb, I can boot linux, (but not windows), but it takes forever. I can access 3 of 4 partitions I think it is. Just damn slowly.

Anyway, what I need is a tool that will detect the bad blocks AND fix them.

Any idea's ?

Thanks much....

David

If you are using reiserfs, take a look at http://www.namesys.com/bad-block-handling.html .
