Tiny 1999 working with WinXP but not Debian or Xubuntu- why is this?

Attempting to build a box based on 1999 Tiny with MicroStar MS-6178L/M Motherboard http://www.fujitsu-siemens.co.uk/rl/...178/MS6178.htm , Intel Celeron 500mhz processor, 43gB HD, 256mB ram. History: rejected by work due to unspecified problems but worked here with clean install W98SE then WinXP.

Changing my home computing to Linux now, so rebuilt using Debian Etch and its original 16gB HD, problems as described in detail below. SMART test indicated prefails and old age so when I built another box I redeployed a well tested 43gb hd. (btw this also registered prefails/old age... is SMART accurate for these older HD's? Subject of another post sometime).
Result: installer (Lenny) worked 1st time, except error message when trying to load GNOME on 1st boot, and GNOME usually came up without the toolbars. Boot time about 20 minutes. Not much HD activity (indicator light/sound of HD spinning less than I'd expect).
My theory: I had wrongly attributed earlier problem to the HD. Worth trying a different distro?
Tried to load Slackware, but the boot record on the cd wasn't detected (this slack disk worked with another box, I think it unlikely that this is the problem).
Worth trying a skinny distro? Installed Xubuntu. Installed easily but 20mins to 1st boot, and loads some apps. badly eg Openoffice Writer with a fuzzy and useless toolbar. Internet and Email OK. Synaptic slow but working. I know, problem with this is that Xubuntu & Debian have much in common, so not a fair test.
I have successfully loaded Debian on a friend's Tiny- as it wasn't an issue i didn't note the mother board type, otherwise it was a 600mHZ 128mB ram 20gB HD.
My first instinct is that these issues are too time consuming to overcome on an old box, I have all the other hardware so I could buy a new motherboard/processor.
However before I throw the mb & processor out, I thought it worth posting here. I attach the dmesg output below, as there may be clues in it. (I have looked into the iTCO "error" and that doesn't seem to be major but you may not agree?)

Thank you- Phil

Tried setting heads=15 on jumper, 32gB clip on jumper, changing to IDE channel2, disconnecting cdr + dvd on channel 2, using a different IDE lead.. at one point "loading hardware drivers =fail" came up. Booting up with case open confirms that the HD is working very slowly. HD failure would still be the obvious choice except as previous post this HD used to work well in another box. For some reason this motherboard/bios will not use the HD properly in debian or xubuntu, although it will do so in XP

Just a thought... is it possible that driver equivalent to Intel 82801AB PCI Bus Master IDE Controller (listed for this motherboard) is missing from the Linux distros I have used? That would explain why the problem is specific to this motherboard whatever HD is used, but did not occur with Windows which, presumably, included this driver in the installer.
Doesn't get me any further forward though! Because this is a windows driver. So... does another distro have an appropriate driver? I don't expect an answer, but an attempt at a different distro might be worthwhile. gentoo looks like lots of work for in this case an uncertain result, mandriva needs 1Ghz processor... any suggestions?
Right now I'm going to leave well alone and do something sensible!
