time for a NEW (to me) printer

Would my LinuxQuestions colleagues please recommend a new printer for my home and home-office use?

I run some flavor of Linux Mint everywhere that I don't have Android.
For years and years, I've used HP® multifunction {aka, "All-in-One™"} printers. Sadly, it is time to get a NEW (to me) printer as my existing work-horse needs repairs.

My current device is an HP 7310. HP printers and HPLIP+CUPS drivers have worked really well over the years. Ink-jet has worked well as a printing technology. However, the printer companies have all gone crazy with their chip-enabled-ink-supply and anti-refill practices.

Either my home-office or family use all of the features of the typical All-in-One device:
  • color & greyscale photos and images
  • color & greyscale documents
  • scanner
  • copier
  • facsimile send & receive
  • wired and wifi and USB connected
  • automatic duplex (two sided) printing
  • document feeder
  • multiple paper trays -- nice but optional
  • wide selection of supported papers and paper sizes
  • large format, US legal (8½"x14") and US Tabloid/Ledger (11"x17") -- legal required, otherwise optional

Thanks in advance,
~~~ 0;-Dan
SaintDanBert,
Put the HP8620 All-in-One at the top of your list:
http://www.amazon.com/HP-Officejet-W.../dp/B00J8NBVYE
Works great with hplip in Linux.
I'll certainly go check that out.
I've used HP with Linux since an antique, some say ancient, Deskjet-500.
Are there any device features that Linux+HPLIP+CUPS does not support for you?
How do you connect: wired net, wifi net, USB?
Do you have any "connection" troubles? I've had an issue where the printer would remain connected to a print job "forever" forcing me to power cycle the printer and sometimes the connected workstation. I've also had a problem getting a workstation-to-printer connection after a workstation restart.
How does it manage ink?
  • smart "bottles" that cannot be refilled
  • multi-source HP compatible 'bottles"
  • HP-only "bottle" subscription or other hostage approach
  • other
Thanks in advance,
SaintDanBert,
I connect using a USB cable.
For wifi setup see post #10:
http://www.linuxquestions.org/questi...-a-4175527021/
I do not use fax.
xsane works fine.
I am still on the original ink cartridges. Maybe other LQ members can advise you regarding ink supplies.
Alternatively try an HP printer forum or see Amazon's answered questions.
My HP printer is getting up there in printer years. If I eventually must replace it, I expect to get another HP.
It has given me my money's worth.
Just something to think about - color laser printers are getting pretty cheap. My brother-in-law bought a Samsung color laser printer for $125 at Office MaxDepot. It comes with a very small set of toner cartridges which don't last long, but the replacements should last a lot longer than a set of inkjet cartridges. The color toner is more expensive, but I'm pretty certain a lot cheaper in the long run. I gave up and bought a monochrome laser printer for $100 because my inkjet cartridges kept being used up by the automatic cleaning, or else they dried up from non-use. Inkjet cartridges are very expensive in the long run, > $50 for a set. The Samsung works well so far, and was easy enough to set up. I haven't seen any color lasers from HP or Brother, the usual suspects for Linux, for anything close to the price of the Samsung, but even at a higher price might be cheaper in the long run than inkjets.
I've been using the HP Envy for years and it works GREAT with Linux.
It's wireless though and there isn't a usb cable.
It's easy to configure the network in the glass window of the printer.
When I was running Linux Mint 17 the HP Envy worked right out of the box after telling the printer the wifi passkey.
There is the HPLIP package for all of the various HP printers.
It guides access and use of the several features of the HP All-in-One printers.
Of course, most of Linux relies on CUPS for printer queues, utilities and services.
Which software does one use with a Samsung printer -- laser or otherwise?
This is the current site for info I'd think. http://www.bchemnet.com/suldr/
If you know of a model maybe post it and we can survey.
Software to do what? It just prints. The one I have has no scanner, but if it did I would use xsane for scanning. For configuring the Samsung, I use the browser. You access the printer through the router, with your browser. It's completely wireless, although you can connect it via USB if necessary. I've never tried that.
I would imagine CUPS and Sane backend-
If you are running linux you should go for a HP printer to avoid errors. You may also check this top you might find a good printer http://printon3d.com/best-printers-2015/
