Having trouble installing a piece of hardware? Want to know if that peripheral is compatible with Linux?

Thunderbolt3 over type type C port not working

But doesn't seem to work. Do I need special drivers for it? I purhased a cable USB-C to Micro-B 3.1, and plugged it into my USB hub and the USB-C port, and I get apparently no connection to the computer. The hub works fine using its original cable, plugged into a USB-3 port or even a USB-2 or one port. If drivers are needed, where can I get them? I'm running Ubuntu Mate 19.04. Or is there a procedure to turn the USB-C on?

Is the hub a thunderbolt-3 hub? I'm thinking not since it uses a Micro-B cable (thunderbolt 3 I believe is ONLY available when using a thunderbolt-3 usb-c cable). If not, then if it's a thunderbolt-3 port only (and won't step down to basic USB-C like most), it will only work when a thunderbolt-3 device is plugged in.

I don't really know what Thunderbolt three does (or HSB-C, for that matter). But it is a USB-C outlet on the computer, which is touted to be compatible with all of the USB assesories, and the cable that I bought has the proper plugs on both ends to make use of USB-3 with that hub.
