Having trouble installing a piece of hardware? Want to know if that peripheral is compatible with Linux?

thinkpad x20 irda

I have a thinkpad x20, which apparently has no irda hardware according to various sources, and no mention is made of irda in any of ibm's product info. Surprisingly enough, however, it does seem to have an irda controller. Output from `findchip -v` is:

Found NSC PC87338 Controller at 0x2e, DevID=0x0b, Rev. 2
SIR Base 0x0, FIR Base 0x0
IRQ = 0, DMA = -1
Enabled: no, Suspended: no
UART compatible: yes
Half duplex delay = 0 us

Now, this is a chip that will work fine under linux. I'm wondering if I could attach an irda module to the controller (I've never been above doing some motherboard hacking). The IRQ and DMA values are obviously not too happy however, so there'd definitely be more work to do than just some soldering. Also, the thinkpads aren't very configurable from BIOS - most of the onboard settings are altered by programs such as ps2.exe (dos) or tpctl (linux) and there are no IR options given at all when these programs are run on the x20.

The controller exists, however, and obviously has power and I/O to the chipset.

So my problem is this: does anybody have any experience accessing motherboard/chipset options in a thinkpad controller when the hardware options utility has hidden them? I'd need to enable this 87338, and assign it an IRQ and a DMA of 3 and attach it to a serial port, as you can with the irda in other thinkpad models. If I could do that, I'd be prepared to break out the soldering iron...

Nobody got any ideas?
I'm loathe to start poking around in the ROM myself, since if you accidentally activate or corrupt the security features on a thinkpad you will probably end up having to replace the motherboard - something that some other curious souls have discovered, hence the huge yellow warning at http://www.linux-thinkpad.org/. I was hoping somebody who knows about these things would be hanging around here...
