ThinkPad T61 maximum RAM to 8GB?

My ThinkPad T61 is "maxed out" with 4GB RAM, but I'm wondering if anyone on LQ has ever pushed these to their "unofficial maximum memory specs" of 8GB RAM?

I have never exceeded the amount or type of RAM specified by the motherboard documentation. Trying to do so is, in my opinion, asking for trouble. Hardware specs exist for a reason.

Of course, you could try it and let us know what happens, but be sure to back everything of value up to external media before you do.
