ThinkPad T-21 Modems

Hey there, looking for some modem help. I've got an IBM ThinkPad T-21 with what I am fairly certain is 3com combination modem/ethernet card. The ethernet portion works, but the modem does not. It is the 3-com mini-pci 56k modem, (how it turns up in the device manager under windows) and it works fine under windows 2000/xp. I am dual-booting between my Linux environment and Windoze.

The original distro I ran on the powerbook is RedHat 9.1. It didn't recognize the modem, so I tried creating one at /dev/modem (through the gui) and also /dev/ttyS0.

That didn't allow the modem to be recognized. A friend of mine suggested trying Mandrake 9.1, which is usually great at recognizing hardware. But the results were identical between Mandrake 9.1 and Red Hat 9.

I tried looking for troubleshooting tips in these two books from O'Reilly (Net Admin Guide and Running Linux) but did not find any troubleshooting info germain to my problem.

Any thoughts?

Thanks!!!
-Tim
