Thinkpad 600 Debian - Echo and Repeat of sounds

I am using a Thinkpad 600 with Debian-Sarge Kernel 2.6

I am using ICEwm as the windows manager.

I can get a CD to play just fine, but when ever I play a wavefile or when I run my dvd program. The audio echos and repeats the same sounds over and over again.
Has anyone else had this problem in debian, with a thinkpad or in linux in general. I have alsa, and I have installed alsa-oss but nothing seems to fix the unnecessary echo/repeat. It sounds like its going in rounds.

Oh yeah

and I also can't get an mp3 or flac to work. Same problem. Skip, pop, echo.

I would like to know how to Configure OSS. XMMS uses it and the CDs play fine, but the other files crap-up. also if i switch to ALSA it says the device doesnt exist.

So I guess I need to re-install ALSA, and learn how to configure it. Anyone know of any fixes for my current problem before i try alsa.
