The X-windows problem is solved...here's what I did

Hi Folks,

I had great trouble in getting my X-windows up. Now the problem is resolved. I just wanted to post this since I feel it may help others newbies like moi.

I just ran the NVchoober script and it showed me the Kernel module required for my Athlon Xp processor and NVidia Geforce2 Chipset.

1. There is a NVchooser script on NVIDIA website. Download and run. That tells you what are the files you need. Just make sure the script is the right one. Earlier I had downloaded a script which would only tell me about RHL7.2 and my version is 7.3.

2. Do a fresh install. Make sure you specify the right monitor type.

if (install is unable to probe monitor type ){
select Generic SVGA with the matching Horizontal and
vertical synch. (This is important otherwise you'll
get 'No screens found ' error) .

The sync values are found in you monitor manual
}

Install the kernel module and then the GLX.

3. Open the Kernel module Readme Its says, chage the following in your XFree86Config-4 file

a)Change ' Drivers "nv" ' to ' Drivers "nvidia" '
b)You have to comment out Load "GLcore" and another thing (I can't remember at the moment) Then make sure Load "glx" is present.

4. So 'startx' , you should see the NVidia logo.

I'd like to thank all you people...Thymox, Neo,...so many others...can't rememer the names. ( Thanks esp to Neo who told me about the script )

Don't want to be rude, but me sees numerous posts on this problem....and it can be rectified by running the script.

Now back to getting my soundserver running..........

ps I was listening to Imagine - John Lenon and felt that it applies to Opensource a great deal. What a visionary Lenon was !
