The modem is busy

Im have a UsRobotics Sportster Flash 56k modem on my SuSE10.1 installation. This modem works fine when I log in as root. But when logged in as me I get a The modem is busy message in kppp.

This is obviously something to do with user permissions but I cant work out what and where.

Does anybody have any ideas?

Thanks for your time

Andy

Thanks for that Bruce,

However, whilst fiddling about last night I ‘re-scanned’ the modem with YaST and set the modem to talk to ttyS0 instead of ttyS1. Strangely this seems to have done the trick!

I’m not sure why this should be so. Perhaps tty ports have permissions too? But then, I haven't physically moved the modem, so is ttyS1 a link to ttyS0? Odd.

Anyway thanks again for taking the time to reply.

All I need to do now is get the PC talking to Freeserve, or Wanadoo, or Orange, or whatever they’re calling themselves this week.
