The Best distro for AMD 64 Laptop with WI-FI?

Hello, I was wondering wich Linux is better for my Laptop?
Here are the specs:
Right now the Laptop have both Suse 10 and Windows XP Pro

-AMD Turion 64 ML-37(2.0)
-1 gb of RAM
-Radeon x200 Express(128)
-100gb Hard Drive
-Wireless B/G

Today I instaled a 32bit Suse 10 in my laptop and I want to use a 64bit Linux or a 32bit with good WIFI support. This is my first day using Linux. Can some one tell me how to create a Internet Conection(Dial-Up) using Suse I dont know how to do it or where it can be done. Thank you

The Laptop have both Suse 10 and Windows XP Pro

What kind of wireless card do you have (make & model)? We have to know that to see if there's a driver available

Hello, the only information the system information tell me is this:
-Name = [00000010] Broadcom 802.11b/g WLAN.
-Product type = Broadcom 802.11b/g with Speed booster.
-Adapter type = Ethernet 802.3

The Laptop is an Compaq presario V5000us with AMD Turion 64 ML-37 and the card came already installed in the laptop.

if lspci reports the following:
05:02.0 Network controller: Broadcom Corporation BCM4318 [AirForce One 54g] 802.11g Wireless LAN Controller (rev 02)

if NOT, then you may have a different card that also supports bluetooth.

if SO then, you should be able to use the following 64 bit driver:
ftp://ftp.support.acer-euro.com/note...bit/80211g.zip

Note that with Suse:
"Other: Using Ndiswrapper 1.5 and the above driver with no problems. Suse 10 requires some extra help though with this wlan card. In order to work with Suse 10 x86_64, install ndiswrapper and driver then run modprobe ndiswrapper. After that, use Yast to add new network card. Select Device Type = Wireless, Configuration Name = wlan0 (or wlanX where X is the next wireless card number), Hardware Configuration Name = bus-pci-0000:XX:XX.X (replace the X's with the pci location of the device from the output of 'lspci -v') -- for example, my lspci -v returned ':03:02.0' before my BCM4318 card, therefore my Configuration Name is 'pci-bus-0000:03:02.0', Module Name = ndiswrapper, and lastly in Options, put irq=XX where XX is the IRQ number also returned in the output from lspci -v. Click Next and then enter the AP Name and key information if this applies to you. After you finish that and finish the configuration, restart and press F2 at the Suse 10 boot menu. **VERY IMPORTANT** Add the boot option of 'noapic' (NOT 'noacpi') and continue to boot. This option is required for Suse 10 x86_64 to see and use the BCM4318 card. Hope this helps!"

Works great out of the box with Mandriva 2006.0 x86 64

Whether one disto is "better" than another depends on your own needs and preferences. I'd suggest trying them both, then deciding for yourself which one is a better fit. Good luck with it

Seems to support ATI Video, Southbridge, Audio as well as wifi very well in 64 bit.

Any Linux distribution will work with any system. I am against SUSE because they have different steps to install hardware that are not the Linux way and it is packaged based. I recommend using LFS (Linux From Scratch) or Gentoo. Both LFS and Gentoo make you compile programs but Gentoo makes compiling programs very, very easy. Compiling programs is the only way to experience Linux to its fullest.

Mepis has always worked awesome for me with wireless you can always boot from the live cd before you install and try it out.

Other than that i use suse 10 and in about 10 mins or so after i had everything installed i was able to get the wireless working with a few forum helps from linuxquestions.

Unhappy

Thanks at all. your steps helped me so much . now my wireless card works fine and i can see all wireless network around me. but the problem now is that when i ping on any PC on the network i get no response. When i used dmsg i noticed that the client i ping on is replying but something dropped its messges with following message:

printk: 8 message suppressed
martian source 129.2.255.255 from 129.2.111.250, on dev wlan0
ll header: ff:ff:ff:ff:ff:ff:00:03:93:6b:9f:94:08:00

i disabled IP6 support and passed acpi=off and pci=noacpi to boot parameter but no thing solved this trouble.

My wirlesscard is BCM4318 and i'm sure it's working under my suse linux 10 64Bit on AMD 64bit.

Its been poured out like a running river that linux is linux, wheather you use 64 studio or talinux both i randomly picked from distro watch

They have diffrent users experiences for sure, but they can both do what you like.

Personally i use slamd64 a 64 bit port of slackware, i use a customised kernel 2.6.16.1 as it includes the new Marvell Yukon 2 Gigabit Ethernet driver which the default 2.6.14.6 does not include.

The maintainer uses a laptop as a testing platform so it cannot be bad
