tft display & gamma

hello,
i have mandrake 9.1 installed, a onboard geforce 4 mx and a tft display connected to it (via VGA, no DVI). the display is much tooo bright, the colors seem to be over-saturated, although i've set brightness and contrast of the display to the lowest levels! all grey tones become blueish-greenish, and white is so damn bright that it hurts to look at. how can i adjust gamma or is there a way to adjust the 'output level' of the vga card? it seems to me it just produces too much input or something! is there a tool for linux/windows to do that? under windows i can adjust the gamma in the nview settings, which reduces the problem, but colors still look strange with that. with my previous computer, the display worked perfectly!

thank for your help!
thomas
