im using the keystroke ctrl-alt-f1. i didnt know it would make a difference. also, i forgot to post this earlier: the text mode is ok as long as X hasnt started yet.
Crap. Well, there's this command I don't fully understand but 'tput init' might do something and I don't think it would make it any worse. *shrug* Not really sure.
Yeah, I thought it was hard to screw up, too. I don't understand a lot of things *heh, understatement* and I really don't understand the terminal initiailizations and termcap stuff and so on. My guess is that somehow X is resetting values for your terminals that are screwing them up - when it changes the display it's not putting it back.... something like that. Hope someone can help you out. In the meantime, I guess explore the wonderful world of rxvt.

tput init didnt do anything either. at the start, i didnt think that X had anything to do with it, cause its the gui and this isnt. but i think ill check it out. if you have anymore ideas, let me know.

ne1 have any ideas? this is getting really stupid, and so far this is the only problem im having under linux. i tried the 'tput init' command, and all it seems to do is put 2 p's before the user and directory prompt. if i cant get linux 2 work, i cant use nething, cause windoze failed me.

im sorry to keep whining, but this is getting REALLY bad. i tried booting without auto X, but i cant get dri/ 3d accel when i boot X manually. please, someone, anyone.
is your console a framebuffer console or a standard vga console? if its a framebuffer console then its possible that the new driver you installed is not tidying up after itsself when you switch from x to a virtual terminal. if you do have a standard vga console then i cant possibly imagine whats happening.

how would i check if its a framebuffer? i think it is, because i just had to reinstall my system, and the problem occurs only after the drivers were installed. i have a radeon 9000. by the way, reset did something, but i couldnt see what it did, since it didnt fix the problem.
