Text Editor in Console Mode ?

Hi folks !

Thanks to my double RH 8.0 update (Kernel 2.4.18.8 + latest nVidia Drivers) I do not have access to a graphical environment anymore. This means that I'll surely have to proceed manually and to change some parameters in xf86config file etc etc.

My question is :
When in the console mode (which is the only I can get, X server doesn't want to start) WHICH text file editor can I use/is available ?

Is there any text editor installed by default under RH 8.0 ?

Without that I'm really afraid I'll have to reinstall everything ... losing hours, days, weeks of work.

Pls, help !

There are many but I would definitely learn vi.

You can also use pico, jed, joe, mc and so on but vi is usually always installed by default and at times might be the only editor available, so its good know to learn.

pico would be the second choice though if you want an easy editor as vi can be a bit confusing and hard at times.

vim (VI improved) is good as well. I do this:
alias vim='vi'

i'm over simplifying it but helping my complete linux-dumb friend over the phone this worked

hit esc to change modes (edit mode/command mode (the one where the cursor is at the bottom next to a colon)

do all your changes then hit esc until you're in what i described as command mode, then type w (saves)

after saving command mode then q to quit

q! on command mode will quit without saving changes

once you have X back get gvim, just like vim but designed for X.
