Terminal ttyS1 not working after re-install

it worked before I went on the re-install spree. <so the cable should be OK...> Beehive's one text terminal (an HP text terminal set to emulate a vt100) only shows ???????? at reboot but does not respond to 'whack <cR>' on terminal or 'init q' at beehive.

Here is the section of my /etc/inittab, I am at runlevel 3.

#text Terminals
S1:2345:respawn:/sbin/agetty -h -t 60 ttyS1 9600 vt100
S2:2345:respawn:/sbin/agetty -h -t 60 ttyS2 9600 vt100

Oh. P.S. I have read the agetty man page and the Serial terminal howto..

It looks like all I need for agetty is the line in /etc/inittab.

It makes me think that is something with Xorg. Do you use XFree86 ?

Well I would be if I was in runlevel 5, but I am currently having the problem in runlevel 3. Go into your inittab and temorarily change the default runlevel to 3..
(network and multiuser but no X)

I re-typed the lines in my /etc/inittab and tries a few other things and it suddenly started working...
try ttyS0 and ttyS1 instead... anyway it's working now.
