Having trouble installing a piece of hardware? Want to know if that peripheral is compatible with Linux?

Targus PAKP003 mouse & keypad

I have the mouse and keypad listed in the subject.
They work just find after the usb adapter has been properly
initalized.
My problem is trying to figure out what happens to initalize the
usb adapter.
The usb adapter has an led on it and that must be lit for the
mouse & keypad to work.
It can take from minutes to never after having booted my notebook
for the led to light.
I am running FC5 Kernel 2.6.16.16 and using the usual xorg stuff.
I run Gnome as KDE does not play well with the ACPI and my screen.
The notebook is a Sony VGN-A290.
I have looked at all the log files I can find and find nothing
to indicate why the led just came on.

Anyone have an idea where I could look or a simple utility that
I could run to cause the adapter to initalize?
I have searched the Internet and other help sites with no help found.
I am a systems programmer and familiar with linux and building the kernel
from source. I have written device drivers for linux and unix.
Even so I have not figured this one out.
Any suggestions are greatly appriciated.
Thank you.
