Tape Drive Configuration
 

I have a Travan 40 drive, model STT3401A. I can't seem to get it to run.

This is from my /etc/sysconfig/hwconfig

bus: IDE
detached: 0
device: hdd
driver: ignore
desc: "Seagate STT3401A"
-


when I try stinit I get:

Can't find the tape characteristics database.

when I run mt -f /dev/hdd status I get:
/dev/hdd: Input/output error


This is my first linux tape drive install, and it's not going to well.
