System time goes stray on notebook

Hi Guys!

I've got this nice box (P4 1.8) with Slack 8.1, kernel 2.4.18,
which basically runs quite smooth... however, the system time
goes berserk...

I had the box sent to IBM for service, and they ripped out
my HDD, put one with eXPeriment in and ran the box for
days with no time aberrations ...

In Slack I get several minutes an hour late which is quite
annoying ...

A little other problem: sometimes keys (namely Ctrl, Alt, Shft)
get "sticky" in X (that is, the keyboard behaves as if some key
that isn't touched(nor jammed) was held, and instead of Cursor
moves I get numbers every now and then ... again, IBM says
it's all good in XP which pisses me off no end ... :(

Any ideas where/what to look at?

Cheers,
Tink

Hi Guys!

Pleased to announce that problems are solved ;)

After having wailed and googled for a month
I decided to ask the kernel.org mailing list and got a
helpful reply within a day :}

The solution to the problem is APM, or rather, _*not*_ using it ;)

The polling method of the apmd is causing the clock-troubles
(along with annoying keyboard "errors" on my machine), I
recompiled my kernel to ACPI-only mode and it's all good
now :)

According to the kernel-list person the trouble comes from
"odd" apm implementations in newer machines BIOS'.

Cheers,
Tink

Good to hear, and nice of you to put the solution in for other users to find

I wouldn't have guessed that solution.
