System scan similar to pcpitstop for Windows
 

I'm a new user(faux pas - I didn't say noob) to Linux, so bear with me.

The following system was recently given to me, so I'm not sure on some stuff yet:

Mobo - unknown

AMD k6-2 550Mhz, 100Mhz FSB

360MB of ram (not sure how 360 is the total with 3 sticks yet, but
I'm sure onboard video has something to do with it).

Sis 350 8MB oboard video(I could switch to a Voodoo 3 16MB if that will help).

Onboard Audio of some sort

Not sure on HD yet


I'd basically like to run a system scan and diagnosis similar to pcpitstop.com's system scan. Does anyone know of something similar for Linux? I'm just looking to identify bottlenecks because most things in Gnome are running very slow. KDE, well, let's just say I could solve the middle east crisis faster than KDE could load on my system.

Any ideas?

By the way, I will eventually switch to mainly terminal login because this system is being run as a server. Will the GUI just always suffer? I'm running XP on my wife's P3 550 and it runs circles around RH9/Gnome. I always thought Linux was faster and less resource exhaustive.
