Hi,

I have a DVD Burner, a Pioneer DVR-107D, installed in my PC, which runs Debian GNU/Linux.

The burner used to work perfectly. Now, though, when I try to burn a DVD in it, it locks the entire system immediately. The screen freezes, no mouse, cannot be pinged on the network, and must be hard rebooted.

The drive still works for reading DVDs, and for burning CDRs. I can also format a DVD using dvd+rw-format. It only crashes when I try to burn a DVD, using a command like growisofs.

Since it crashes imediately without giving any (apparent) messages as to what the problem is, I am flummoxed. Could it be a hardware problem? How can I further test this?

Any help would be appreciated!

Does growisofs do any burning ?
I thought it just created the iso correctly in preparation for the burn process.

When doing it from the command line, does it show up any kind of errors ? (I'm assuming you're doing this from a GUI).
Also, does /var/log/messages show anything during the burn process ?

This is mainly speculation on my part, as I've not done any DVD burning yet. However, this is where I'd start looking.
