Having trouble installing a piece of hardware? Want to know if that peripheral is compatible with Linux?

SynCE & ppc-6800 (Mogul): I get no /dev/ttyUSB0 & "Hal reports no devices connected"

I followed the Wiki, but get the above mentioned issues. I plug in the device but no /dev/ttyUSB0 device shows up. Any ideas?

My dmesg before connection:

Code:
~$ sudo dmesg | tail -n10
[ 295.369031] usb 1-1: new full speed USB device using uhci_hcd and address 8
[ 295.375943] usb 1-1: configuration #1 chosen from 1 choice
[ 317.364734] usb 1-1: USB disconnect, address 8
[ 327.434299] usb 1-1: new full speed USB device using uhci_hcd and address 9
[ 327.442088] usb 1-1: configuration #1 chosen from 1 choice

[ 340.077597] usb 1-1: configuration #1 chosen from 1 choice
[ 390.840619] usb 1-1: USB disconnect, address 11
new stuff after:

Are you able to successfully connect this device to another computer? I have seen the repeated "new device" and "disconnect" messages like those you've posted on USB devices with bad cables or connectors.

I am able to connect to my Windows workstation. The connects and disconnects were from me plugging and unplugging a few times.

I'd guessed at first that the problem has something to do with the fact that after connecting I still have no "ttyUSBx" device, but if I turn on ICS and then plug it in I do get an rndis0 interface in ifconfig. Unfortunately, it has a 169.254.2.2 address though, and no gateway.

For those of you out there with similar problems, I'll provide the answer that worked for me (as usual):

I followed the tethered phone wiki for ubuntu pretty much to the letter. It wasn't until I enabled [Start->Settings->Connections->USB to PC->Enable advanced network] functionality that it worked for me. I should note, that I had previously also applied the information from the not-so-well-organized-and-published "wiki" on how to tether a Sprint Mogul (PPC-6800) without a wireless data plan (or whatever they call the $40/mo phone as modem plan, aka "PAM" plan).

I also had to run dhclient on rndis0.

For the record, the tethered by phone via SynCE wiki is appallingly lean, so don't expect anything but the BARE basics of how to setup. Also, oddly, with respect synchronizing the phone with a PC the what-its-for and what-to-do-next kinds of information are essentially absent. I've no idea, for example, what other than "Contacts" and "Calendar" I can sync, or more importantly, how to specify things like whether PC trumps PDA, or vice versa.
