Synaptics touchpad taps often missed

I just put Linux on my laptop earlier in the week. The touchpad seems to work fine except that ~10-25% of the time taps are completely ignored. All other touchpad functions work flawlessly. Same thing happens in both Fedora 8 and openSUSE 10.3, GNOME & KDE. Seems like (maybe) the problem is exacerbated with heavier system loads. Any ideas?

Try 'man synaptics' and read the MaxTapTime parameter. You can add the option to your /etc/X11/xorg.conf for the Synaptics driver. For example:

Section "InputDevice"
        Identifier "Synaptics"
        Driver "synaptics"
        Option "Device" "/dev/input/mice"
        Option "Protocol" "auto-dev"
        Option "Emulate3Buttons" "no"
        Option "ShmConfig" "on"
        Option "MaxTapTime" "20"
