Symbios/Lsi scsi controller driver, not a raid

Hi,

How to troubleshoot I think it may just be the wrong driver

I installed an lsi raid scsi driver as I didn't know what else to do.

But I do not have a raid. All I have is a solo U2W scsi hard drive.

And, It's a LSI8951U pci controller it is an U2W lvd controller but not a raid controller.

here's the relevant line from lspci

0000:00:0d.0 SCSI storage controller: LSI Logic / Symbios Logic 53c895 (rev 02)

0000:01:00.0 VGA compatible controller: Matrox Graphics, Inc. MGA G400 AGP (rev 82)

Suse 9.2 Pro default kernel (2.6.8 something or other)

booted from cd, did the install. early during that it forced me to make a modules 2 floppy disk of which content be for said scsi controller or so it seems to me. after I made the modules 2 floppy it asked me to insert it. once inserted, it brought up three lsi drivers but none seem to be the right driver for my controller (installed the raid driver).

From log file:
0:1:0hase change 6-7 11@274d5b84 resid=2.

sym0:1:0hase change 6-7 11@274d5b84 resid=2.

sym0:1:0hase change 6-7 11@274d5b84 resid=2.

sym0:1:0hase change 6-7 11@274d5b84 resid=2.

(continues to repeat a lot, non stop, pumps it out repetitively)

HCL mentions

Module: sym53c8xx

modprobe I tried but don't know howto do it right or if it returns loaded modules.

sometimes it boots to text mode, other times boots to X win KDE which works very super except for whenever X refuse to make a go of it then it's command line time.

I tried CentOS 3.3 with the default 2.4.X kernel. This sys runs very fine on this same hardware.

Perhaps the sym53c8xx driver is somewhat broken in 2.6.8 kernel.

I wonder if I should report my experience on that anywhere?

Thanks. Alan.
