Switching from USB to PS/2

Hi!

I have a computer running Slackware 10.1 I had an USB mouse connected to it, but I needed the USB mouse on another computer so I plugged in a PS/2 mouse. Every time I start the X server, the computer hangs and I have to make a hard reboot. How can I tell Slackware to swich to PS/2?

Any ideas???

In your xorg.conf file (in the /etc/X11 directory) you probably just need to update your Mouse Protocol setting to "ImPS/2"

That's just a guess though -- are any error messages being displayed, and if so, what are they? -- J.W.

My /var/log/xorg.0.log looks something like this:

(EE) xf86OpenSerial: Cannot open device /dev/input/mice
No such device
(EE) Mouse1: cannot open input device
(EE) PreInit failed for input device "Mouse1"
(II) Unload module: "Mouse"
...
(WW) No core pointer registered
...

Fatal server error:
failed to initialize core devices

I'm pretty sure you will need to modify the xorg.conf file, located in the /etc/X11 directory. Can you post that? If my guess is correct it would be a minor manual edit to correct the problem. -- J.W.

Sorry for the delay in replying. In this section
Code:
Identifier "Mouse1"
Driver "mouse"
Option "Protocol" "PS/2" <-- Change to "IMPS/2"
Option "Device" "/dev/input/mice" <-- Change to "/dev/mouse"
I can't promise that will work, but it's worth a try. Good luck with it -- J.W.

That is strange that X Window System hangs because I had some trouble with PS/2 mice when switching from kernel version 2.4.x to 2.6.x, but GUI never hang. The mouse cursor will just stay there or jump around, so I recompile the kernel and make PS/2 support as a module instead built-in. It works well this way, but the kernel developers changed the code on how kernel version 2.6.x detects PS/2 mice. Loading the PS/2 mouse module needed to be done manually. The name of the PS/2 mouse module is psmouse. You can put it in rc.local (was it local.rc) or rc.M, but make sure you use the full path of modprobe.

You may need to change

Option "Device" "/dev/mouse"

to

Option "Device" "/dev/psaux"

if it does not work. Some distributions have /dev/mouse linking to /dev/psaux.

If you do not know what Protocol will work for your mouse, specify auto. Check the logs after GUI is loaded. Then change to the protocol that it detected.
