I had one of them cheap cards with a Silicon Image chipset on it. While the Linux 2.6 kernel matures fast enough to include workarounds for vendors like SI who violate protocols I'd thrash anything with a SI chipset on it rather than expose another machine to it. Anyway, personal experiences may vary (very much), maybe somebody else has made good use of SI chipset products under GNU/Linux.
