suse XF86Config and radeon ve (7000)

Arrgh! It took me several days to get 3D acceleration to work with Redhat9, 10 minutes with Mandrake9.2, and I've been trying for a week now to make it work with SuSE9.0. My card is a radeon ve, AKA 7000 PCI. Before I get a bunch of people who have Radeon 8500's or something telling me to go to ATI for a driver, go look for yourself for a driver for this card. You won't find it. Just a link to XFree86. The driver I need to use ('radeon') is included with dri. Has anybody had any luck getting this card to work with SuSE?

Wow, well that's pretty damn odd. Cause I found it in about 2 minutes. Gee..., that was hard. Maybe the fact that there's 2 other threads for this exact card.. One of which is called.. "Radeon 7000 Driver" is the reason it didnt take long to find all the driver links?

Yes I'm being really sarcastic... but this deserves it. How bout looking up those other posts now and following the instructions for the FireGL driver so you'll have 3d.

Don't be too hard on the guy, Caeda, here's two facts for you, ...and anybody who cares,

Fact #1: the only Linux driver from Ati for radeons is the fglrx.
Fact #2: fglrx support only 8500 and up radeon cards.

There seems to be a lot of misinformation going on about that subject and well, ...you just contributed to it. ...

For you Wally, you're probably just missing Option "ForcePCIMode" "1" in Section "Device".
If not look at the output of dmesg and into /var/log/XFree86.0.log for signs of trouble and post the config file, so someone can tell you if something else is missing.

"Fact #2: fglrx support only 8500 and up radeon cards."

Wrong. If gflr is you way of abbreviating FireGL driver, it works for all radeon cards including the 7000. I found this fact scattered about in help forums for getting the card to work, outside of linux questions. If other people can use the driver so can he/you.

I dunno what you saw [...care to post a link?], but it's highly unlikely, a hack if anything [...and I doubt it's possible anyway] and quite recent or I'd know about it ...yes very very unlikely.

Just so no one gets thrown off by this thread, I'll let you in on a little secret, Ati's driver or FireGL driver or fglrx driver or whatever you wanna call it, there's only one, don't even support the PCI version of the cards they do support ...8500 and up

So the odds of getting a 7000 PCI working on them are hmmm... shallow, at best, wouldn't you think?

Untamed you're right on both counts. Well, almost. I did get my card to work with fglrx, but couldn't get 3D support. You're also right about the "ForcePCIMode" option. It worked for me under Redhat9 and Mandrake9.2. I just read a thread called "Radeon 7000 Driver" I really got a kick out of this after the beating Caeda laid on me. ...
Radeon 7000 Driver
I too found mention of people using the fglrx driver with this card. It appeared to be the answer for the guy looking for a driver to run dual monitors. It seemed to be the answer for the guy who didn't care about 3D. I tried it, even though I really didn't read anything from somebody with a radeon 7000 PCI who got 3D acceleration with the fglrx driver. Neither did I. I did, however, get 3D support using the driver recommened on the ATI site, which is the link pointing to XFree86.org, and the radeon driver that's in it. So did most of the other people whose posts I read that got 3D support on an ATI Radeon 7000 PCI. I read lot's, believe me. How's that size nine tastin' there now, buuuddy?

I found this in dmesg, near the bottom, twice. That's the onboard
"agpgart: agpgart: Detected an Intel i815, but could not find the secondary device. Assuming a non-integrated video card.
agpgart: no supported devices found."
Hmmm??

Here's my XFree86.0.log...

I just checked my BIOS. Integrated Video is disabled, so I don't think the i815 should be detected.

>I really didn't read anything from somebody with a radeon 7000 PCI who got 3D acceleration with the fglrx driver.

You won't, not even non-PCI 7x00, they're just not supported in 3d by Ati ....period.
As I said, there's a lot of misinformation spread out by well meaning "helpers" but facts remain.

Your dmesg output looks ok, finds your integrated 1815 but no agp interface routed because it's disabled in BIOS, then the log shows your PCI card being detected.

btw, you posted your log twice but not your config.
Make sure you have Load "dri" and Load "glx" in Section "Module"

And if your log really ends this way, with (II) Loading font FreeType as the last line, you'll need to look into that first, something is wrong here, the Freetype module doesn't get loaded and it seems to be your Xserver's fatal error.

Oops! Sorry about that. I just replaced the second log with the config. I'll try removing Load "freetype" and see what happens. Thanks for your help UnTamed.

Ok, I commented out Load "freetype", and was presented with a much longer XFree86.0.log. Here it is.
This is a pre-release version of XFree86, and is not supported in any
way. Bugs may be reported to XFree86@XFree86.Org and patches submitted
to fixes@XFree86.Org. Before reporting bugs in pre-release versions,
please check the latest version in the XFree86 CVS repository
(http://www.XFree86.Org/cvs).

XFree86 Version 4.3.0.1
Release Date: 9 May 2003
X Protocol Version 11, Revision 0, Release 6.6
Build Operating System: SuSE Linux [ELF] SuSE
Build Date: 02 October 2003
Before reporting problems, check http://www.XFree86.Org/
to make sure that you have the latest version.

Awright, that's better, now tell me, before you startx, have you tried manually loading the radeon drm module, like so;
modprobe -v radeon
...you can check if it's already loaded with lsmod but unless you set it up yourself to load at boot, it shouldn't be loaded at this point.
The -v is verbose and it should feedback whether or not it loads correctly.
If it spits out something like "loading module /lib/modules/blabla/radeon.o", then try to startx.

...but that's one messed up config file if I ever saw one, nothing really critical about it but lots of innacurate or unrequired stuff.

...ohhh! and you forgot to add a boolean value to Option "ForcePCIMode",
It's Option "ForcePCIMode" "1" , or "true" or "yes", ...try that first.

Tell me about it. I did have the "TRUE" on the ForcePCIMode option, sax must have reset it back, that's how it read after I used sax to enable the ForcePCIMode. I'll go fix that first, then loading the drm module manually and let you know what happens. Commenting out the Load "freetype" fixed the problem I was having opening emacs from the console, and probably some other stuff I haven't noticed yet. Thanks again.

Untamed,
Ok, I added the "1" to Option "ForcePCIMode", it didn't make a difference. So I did the other thing.
modprobe -v radeon
# pre-install radeon:
/sbin/modprobe "k" "agpgart"
/lib/modules/2.4.21-166-default/kernel/drivers/char/agp/agpgart.0: insmod agpgart failed
modprobe: pre-install radeon failed
modprobe: insmod radeon failed

If I look in /lib/modules/2.4.21-166-default/kernel/drivers/char/agp, I find not agpgart.0, but agpgart.o. I could be wrong, but it looks to me like either it's should be looking for agpgart.o, or agpgart.o should be agpgart.0.
Wally

Oops, my mistake, it is looking for agpgart.o. Can't read my own handwriting.

Hmm ...you got me there !?!

I can't imagine anything but some distro specific config that would make "radeon" dependant on "agpgart" this way.
I got a old r100 [...32SDR] in my 2nd box and I just tried, and could, load "radeon" without it trying to load "agpgart" ...but I'm no expert [...especially with PCI cards] and may very well overlook something obvious here.
Maybe it's not the issue and maybe even PCI cards rely on 'agpgart" !?!
Have you tried inserting "agpgart" yourself before "radeon"?, if so post the output of modprobe -v agpgart.

Anyway, you should have a different XFree86.0.log output now that PCIMode is set, look it up is the only suggestion I can come up with at this point :/
