SuSe - how to make sound work

Hi, first let me tell you that I am a complete newbie to linux. If you tell me I need to recompile y kernel or something I have no idea how to do that!
Here'es my problem...
I've just installed SuSe 9.1 and I'm trying to setup my sound card (I'm still in the Yast installer I havent actually booted into kde yet). When I try and install the sound card I get a message saying
'An error occurred during the installation of Sound Controller. The kernel module snd-intel8x0 for sound support could not be loaded. This can be caused by incorrect module parameters, including invalid IO or IRQ parameters.'
This message comes up even if I tell it its a different model sound card (but it says a different module).
I'm not entirely sure what the sound card is but it's the onboard sound on an ECS K7S5A motherboard.
How do I overcome this?
Thanks, Ant.

I don't know about Yast so I don't know what to do inside yast
But I think you should get your distro up and running first, there would be more tools for us to navigate the problem and fix it.

Would you mind post the output of the following command:
Code:
 /sbin/lspci
so we can see the sound card IO and IRQ parameters ?

Welcome to LQ. Try the following:

1. Open a terminal session (eg, get to the command line) and become root. If you're using KDE, you can start a terminal session by clicking on the icon that looks like a blue monitor with a yellow scallop shell in front of it. To become root, type "su" (no quotes) and enter your root password. You should now be at the command line prompt, running with root privs.

2. Type "alsaconf" (no quotes). This utility program will attempt to configure your sound card. It will play a little fanfare at the end if it runs successfully.

3. If you don't hear anything, it could be due to a "D'oh!!" situation (speakers are turned off, not plugged into the right jack, volume is turned to zero, etc) but if things seem to look OK, then it may be that your volume levels are muted. To fix it, type "alsamixer". This will open up the volume settings panel for a variety of components. Use the up/down arrows to control the volume level, use the left/right arrows to navigate through all the choices.

4. You can save any changes you make in alsamixer by running "alsactl -store" (no quotes)

That usually should do the trick, but sometimes getting sound to work can be tricky. Post back with any updates

On the other end my problems is not solved ( yet.
I followed the steps that JW advised. I did hear the fanfare.
My system is not entirely soundless - with some effort** I can
play Audio CDs. But I have no success playing any mp3 file from
my files. Also, the notifications sounds are interrupted and not
clear. I looked for specific information around but in vain.
Any insight deeply appreciated,
Best luck to you
ibex

** I need to "open with" e.g. Kaffeine the audio CD
and then go at the tool bar and change the "NEW" to "Audio CD".
Then works. Of course I dream to play some DVD movies too ....

Install these soft:
1) Mplayer and all of its codecs as well.
2) Install xine-lib after you have install the mplayer's codecs.
I don't have any experience, I use only these two soft.
xine as a DVD player and mplayer for the rest

Hey east-friend,

Thanks for your advice.
I am trying to install MPlayer but it tells me that
I need to downgrade my C compiler! So, I am looking
for something gcc-3.x RPM to do the trick easily but
I do no know what to get. There are tenths of gcc rpms
for Suse (most of them smaller files - I guess for upgrades only).

Any ideas?

go to google freshmeat.net or google.com and query mplayer.
It will give you link to mpalyer home page.
There you should browse the maplyer's download section for the codecs.
Download the all codecs package and follow the instruction.

Here is the solution

Go to http://packman.links2linux.org/
then type in the search box and download next rpms :

divx4linux
libxine
speex
w32codec
xine-ui
xvid

Install all of it by rpm -ivh or rpm -Uvh (if you alredy have some version)
and your sound will work as well as video.

Guys,

Have you installed MPlayer?
With the gcc-4.xxx C Ccmpiler (which my new SUSE has)
this is not possible. The MPlayer installation asks me
to downgrade to older versions. How do you go around this?

After your advice Xine plays everything but it does
not have an easy-to-use interface e.g. with a hiding bar
at the bottom. Also, to get rid of my Windoze I first need
to find out how to burn DVDs.

I do try to be legal, but sometimes you know you want
to copy something ... in Windows there are tools available
such as AnyDVD and CloneDVD. What people do in Linux?
