Question SuSE and Modem Configuration

Yup, I'm a newbie. I want to be able to get away from windows...but if I can't get modem working........

I have a hardware controlled PCI modem, an U.S. Robotics 5610b. The modem is recognized in the hardware profile under PCI cards, but I can't get it to be recognized in modem module. U.S. Robotics has a Red Hat rpm that fixes it in Red Hat, but it doesn't seem to work for SuSE.

Does anyone have any suggestions?

Thanks,
Steve

Never mind! I broke down and purchased an external modem, and there have been no problems...yet!

Question

You have asked my question exactly. But I am not ready to purchase a new modem as the solution. I like my USR 5610B.

I have learned that the 5610 is hardwired to COM5. So, since the USR RH setserial rpm did not work, I tried to manually force the modem to ttys2 (that's where it works on my Windows side) using a setserial command. No luck. I got an I/O error everytime I tried this, trying every possible port.

I checked for other devices using IRQ 19 looking for conflicts. My USB 2 card was the only PCI device using IRQ 19 along with my modem. I removed the USB card and rebooted. No luck. I switched my modem to a different slot. No luck. I don't have a map of the PCI slots, but this config workes fine on the windows side with no conflicts.

Is there some sort of second step that I don't understand? I am a SuSe 8.2 newbie. SuSe can see my modem and when it posts up I can see that ppp0 (my undetected modem) is listed as being in manual mode. Any help would be appreciated.

Thanks,
Tipi
