I was interested in solving this problem because I have a similar problem with one of my SuSE 8.2 rig. Fortunately I have a different mobo. I solved this by changing BIOS setting ;-)
Here is likely how to solve your problem. From one of the link above that catched my attention is solving it by patching grub. So:
download grub*.src.rpm for SuSE 8.2 e.g. from rpm.pbone.net
install it using rpm -ivh grub*.src.rpm
Go to /usr/src/packages/SOURCES/grub-0.93.tar.gz/grub-0.93/stage2
where asm.S is.
Patch this file as suggested from the first link above

But applying the following changes will:
/*
* stop_floppy()
*
* Stops the floppy drive from spinning, so that other software is
* jumped to with a known state.
*/
ENTRY(stop_floppy)
- movw $0x3F2, %dx
- xorb %al, %al
- outb %al, %dx

Rebuild and install this new grub e.g. ./configure make make install
Good luck and have fun ;-)
