SuSE and floppy

Hi

I've installed Suse 8.2 but the floppy don't work!

In YaST2 (control center), in hardware, the floppy isn't in the list!

In startup fase, I've this message "no floppy controllers found"

Cd, DVD and CD-R work correctly!

Any ideas? Help me!

Go into your bios and check that
1 - the onboard FDC is enabled
2 - the correct floppy is chosen as disk A - ie 1.44 M (I assume).

In your BIOS, probably in the section "Integrated Peripherals" or something like that, there should be a line beginning On-board FDC (floppy disk controller).
Make sure it is enabled.

Apart from that, have you looked at SuSE's online support database? - http://sdb.suse.de/sdb/en/html/

I was interested in solving this problem because I have a similar problem with one of my SuSE 8.2 rig. Fortunately I have a different mobo. I solved this by changing BIOS setting ;-)

Here is likely how to solve your problem. From one of the link above that catched my attention is solving it by patching grub. So:

download grub*.src.rpm for SuSE 8.2 e.g. from rpm.pbone.net

install it using rpm -ivh grub*.src.rpm

Go to /usr/src/packages/SOURCES/grub-0.93.tar.gz/grub-0.93/stage2
where asm.S is.

Patch this file as suggested from the first link above
Quote:
But applying the following changes will:

/*
* stop_floppy()
*
* Stops the floppy drive from spinning, so that other software is
* jumped to with a known state.
*/
ENTRY(stop_floppy)
- movw $0x3F2, %dx
- xorb %al, %al
- outb %al, %dx
ret
Rebuild and install this new grub e.g. ./configure make make install

Good luck and have fun ;-)
