strangely, in SUSEPLUGGER sound window, the drivers are listed as follows:
Driver Info #0:
Driver Status: i810_audio is not active
Driver Activation Cmd: "modprobe i810_audio"
Driver Info #1:
Driver Status: snd-intel8x0 is active
Driver Activation Cmd: "modprobe snd-intel8x0"
i have no idea why there are two drivers installed or which is ideal for this, or, for that matter, how to switch them to test other.
Exactly as on my working system
I'm seriously starting to think there are strange forces at work here
the thing that really stumps me is how the card is picking up the sound info from my audio cds, but not dvds or any other software output.
unfortunately, i am caught in newbiesville.
we should just sit here and wait til someone takes pity on us and restores our lackluster linux dignity with one of those classic prologues to a solution, like "oh, that's easy, just...."

I believe everyone in this thread has different problems. With that in mind, anyone in the thread that has a problem, may be better served to post a new thread with the specifics of their problem with the exception of the original poster. You may also want to include any relevant info, e.g. lspci -v, lsmod, etc.
I'm not trying to be a party pooper, but, a thread like this with more problems than answers is hard to follow and keep up with. This increases the chance that none get the help they need.
I hope this doesn't offend anyone, I'm only trying to help.
good luck.

Yes this is somewhat frustrating.
As I said before my other system (Duron 800) seems to be bullet proof with me being able to muck about to my hearts content and have everything running.
Yet this Athlon based system is doing my head in. Seemed much more fiddly to get video working properly and well the sound, enough said
If it wasn't for the volume of data stored on it I'd start from scratch.

i agree with you, theoretically, peacedog, but i thought if we all put our heads together we might turn iron into gold.
unfortunately, my new thread in suse has gotten all of one response so...
but, i appreciate your commenting and apologize for adding to confusion of thread.
No need to apologize, I just felt that each problem defined clearly in a new thread might get more attention.
I agree if we put our heads together we may come up with something. That's what the forum is all about. My only concern is that there are so many seemingly different problems, that none will get solved.
With that said, I'll stay here as long as someone has a problem, and is willing to give me the time it may take to keep up and research their specific problem to find an answer.

A minor eureka moment - there were sounds.
I dont know why but decided to go to init 3 and switched the HD15 input to my monitor over to DVI-D.
Ran alsaconf and was nearly deafened because I've had the volume up loud just in case.
Had to switch back to HD15 to see init 5.
Ran alsaconf in terminal - no sound
So, HD15 = no sound, DVI-D = yes sound. HD15 = GUI, DVI-D = no GUI.
Then a MAJOR eureka moment.
Check out connectors on back of monitor. Move sound plug from DVI-D to HD15 sockets
Sound is go
Next question - why no gui output in DVI? New thread time
Thanks again for all help. I agree with peacedogs statement:

But I am learning alot about AC97 and sound in linux by the mixture of problems in this post. As the thread starter I have no problem with anyone hitch hiking along even if their problem is slightly different. For example I didnt even remember about SUSEPLUGGER untill prj posted his printout -- very usefull info for a rookie like myself!!
it must be that poetic welsh blood that drove you to imagine an entirely different approach.
i have just installed an ati graphics card, which i am also having difficulties configuring that due to a bewildering lack of understanding on my part. that has a dvi jack as well, and i just wonder...
would you mind explaining how you switch the input from hd15 to dvi in suse or bios? perhaps i will have success as well.
as far as this thread is concerned, i think it would behoove us to find out exactly what a succesfuly configured system's LSMOD looks like, especially the audio section.
moreover, all the disparate approachs and opinions on the web are leading me to believe that we need to compile a datasheet on the needed steps in audio configuration v.v., the alsa and oss configuration of a soundcard in suse. for that, we need successful and generous oracles, including novell itself. over the weekend, i will start compiling all the URLS and info i can towards that end.
as one who is driven partially by the desire to watch dvds on my computer, having given the idiot box up long ago, i am reminded of a well-known head of MGM who back in the days of the silent film queried, "and who the hell wants to listen actors talk, anyway? (or something to that effect.) the simple answer is, yours truly.
Hope that helps. I haven't found much to go off of from this.. . Although this uses the same chip set as the none working model, it is from a different MB.

A fit of desparation!
It was going back to basics really - tried configuring at run level 3 rather than 5. Played with the inputs to monitor and noticed sound was available whilst DVI was switched in but not HD15. Checked physical conectors on back of monitor and noticed sound cable was plugged into DVI sound socket so just popped it into HD15 sound socket, et voila sound whilst in level 5 was available.
Then ran a few more tests and discovered I can view a pure level 3 console in DVI, but for some reason not level 5 with X up and running so something needs changing in my /etc/XF86Config. This needs more research
There are some lines XF86Config that can be added to specify the primary output so I need to work this out - Probably similar on the ATI.
Probably one of the best set up ups I've come across for ATI (I used to run one) was amongst the Sun Project Looking glass docs - sorry not sure of the URL though.
No problems with HD15 so in effect everything is useable, but would be nice to use DVI.
Its quite galling that my sound config has been correct all along but I've learnt abit. Its not always the obvious that is the answer to a problem.
Many many thanks to all those who've helped.
For reference here's my final lsmod - it works - ye hah
These are the commonly used types with another being the S-video connectors used on "TV-out" with leads often terminating in phono plugs. These in turn can be used with a scart adapter to plug straight into a television or video.
Well, here is my solution. alsa does not work on my PC. It works fine on my PC at work, which uses via82xxx driver, and comparing lsmod and lspci I see no reason it shouldnt work on my home PC. So I downloaded the oss driver from
and it works just fine.I suggest that everyone in this thread try that also.
please post your results so others may learn.
Since I solved my own problem , I am going to keep the $1,000,000,000,000 ;-)
Untill proven otherwise: alsa does NOT work on a PcChips M851G motherboard running Suse 9.2 ..
And that my freinds will end this thread (for my problem). I started a new thread in hardware concerning this specific problem, in case there is anyone else in the world running Suse 9.2 on a M851g mainboard .......
Please feel free to hi-jack this thread
Good luck to all of you ...
