suse 9.1 added secondary HD /w win98 wont boot

i loaded suse 9.0 pro with a dvd, upgraded to 9.1 via ftp, updated all patches. i then added a second hard (win98) drive which suse recognizes.

then i went to yast>boot loaded config

i asked for a new proposal and thw windows hard drive was found

i now have linux, windows, floppy, failsafe, memorytest
( i didnt have windows before the previous step)

i even went into yast and added the mount point /windows/c to the new HD

when i try to access windows, i get a blank screen with the following:

root (hd1,0)
Filesystem type is fat, partition type 0xc
chainloader +1

with a blinking cursor

i have another box that had win2k first then o loaded suse the exact same procedure i mentioned earlier, and windows works. i check the boot loader config on that box, and everything looks the same as the first box.

can i add a windows hard drive after suse 9.x has been loaded

the only thing i can think of is that the win98 HD was once on its own and it has its own bootup instructions or MBR

You want to be able to boot 98 right?

I assume that grub is your bootloader?

brundle-fly 09-20-2004 12:47 PM

Yes, i want to be able to use GRUB and select either linux (suse 9.1) or windows (windows98 or other win OS)

Try reading the info here:

Hope it helps.

to brundle-fly
let me know if get it to work. I have the same problem - my second drive OS (Win XP) will boot from GRUB. I can boot it only if I go to BIOS and change the drive boot order (so it checks the drive with XP first).

brundle-fly 09-21-2004 11:22 AM

the instructions i see here seem like i have to start from scrath. i have my suse 9.1 just the way i like it, and i want to bring win98 into the picture which eventually i will upgrade to xp home. The only wayi know how to make this work is by installing winxp first on the 20gb drive, then re-load suse 9.1 on the second 40gb drive. Suse will recognize the windows drive and added into grub automaticlly. Of caourse thats my last resort.

im going to try to edit the boot loader simialar to the instructions, but if that doesnt work, ill go to plan B.

i let you know if it works

Thanx for the info

Windows should always be installed first to avoid any MBR conflicts between win and lin. even with 98 or xp

michaelk 09-22-2004 09:00 AM

It is easier installing linux after windows but not really a problem. You just have to remember that windows will overwrite the MBR.

With window on the second you need to add the following to the grub configuration file for the windows entry.
map (hd0) (hd1)
map (hd1) (hd0)

brundle-fly 09-23-2004 09:52 PM

yeah, the thing is that suse was loaded first and windows was already loaded on the second hard drive, so all suse kknew about the new hard drive was that its a FAT partition. The MBR stayed the same on the first hard drive and the second hard drive already had win98. Will the grub map entries still work?

Yes, read this:

thankx all, time is of the essence so i have to load xp first then suse 9.1, i know that will work for sure.
