suse 8.2 sound & network

I installed suse by downloading the whole tree and running it from my hardisk. Everything installed OK, but I'm having trouble configuring my sound and internet connection.

I have a cable modem connected to my puter through a realtek rtl1839. While yast2 recognizes it and says it configures it ok and dhcp selected, it just doesn't work. I try to run ifdown eth0 and it works, but whenI try to bring it back up with ifup etho it can't find an ip and says it's backgrounding. I've tried removing and reinstalling the device in yast2 bbut no matter how many times I try it it won't work, nothing.

As for my sound, it at least works...though very poorly. it plays system sounds like the various test sounds, but they're all stuttered. like when you should hear a nice test tune I just get ba ba ba ba ba ba ba ba ba ba ba ba.....in that kind of stuttering way. It eventually finishes the sound, but it's way longer than it should be, and it sounds awful. My sound card is a true card....pci creative labs sound blaster ensonique.

Both my sound and network card work in every distro I've ever tried. Ican't figure out wats wrong for the life of me....

Any tips apreciated.

sure. I've been playing in yast alot, and dhcp is checked fine, and in the box below it (i forget what it's called now) I can see my isp's name listed along with a few other spots noting 255.555.555.5 or whatever.... (no, I have no clue what I'm doing, but all the settings look right to me)

Here's the file:

What happens when you try and ping yourself? Your ISP? Can you? Any errors coming up?

Have you checked that your /etc/hosts is written correctly?

As far as I understand, you are using ipv6...is that correct?

The installation that I have, is ipv4 and I have very little ipv6 experience. I am not saying that that is the problem, but it's definitley worth a look trying to troubleshoot the problem with that in mind...

just a thought...

I have almost the same problem. i have also a rtl8139 network card.
i did a ftp install with a suse 8.2 boot cd. everything work good and network also, but when it finish download all files and restart, than it start yast2 and there my network card stop working.
i use dhcp because i have a router that give the ip's
but i know the rtl8139too driver works, but only in the install and not when the install finish.
and i also think this IPv6 is not good but i dont know how to disable it.

I remember that when I installed SuSE, there was a part of the installation where it asked about the network set-up configuration....(many other distros do it as well, of course)...and here you can probably find options that suit you.

I am not 100% if you can do a plain good 'ol ipv4 install but give it a go if you cannot find another way....

hmmm. thank you veru much for your replies. and it's nice to see that I'm not the only one. I have no idea what this ipv6 thing is, but I guess I oughtta read up on it. i'll post back if I manage to figure this out.

I've posted similar threads at the osnews forums, the desktoplinux forums, and the Lycoris.org forums. hopefully someone out there will know a quick fix to this.....but I will post back what I find.

that's already there....the very last line of modules.conf is alias eth0 8139too

I changed it to rtl8139 and rebooted. changed it back and rebooted. deleted my nic in yast, reistalled and configured it, rebooted.

still not working.

I found it, the problem is the acpi (Advanced Configuration and Power Interface)
i dont know why, but for me it works
if you disable it in the bootloader with acpi=off than you will see it will work.
