Having trouble installing a piece of hardware? Want to know if that peripheral is compatible with Linux?

SuSE 8.2 & USB Optical Wheelmouse no longer working

I wonder if someone has seen this behaviour before:-

I have usb speakers, mouse, card reader, 4 port un-powered ext. usb bus.

All of these work perfectly in either Win98 or Linux.

Suddenly the mouse no longer works in Linux, yet in Windows it-s still fine.
I have rebooted several times. Into windows, everything OK, back into Linux, everything EXCEPT the mouse.

The way things are attached:-

2 Motherboard USB slots:-

1 takes just card/reader
2 has the 4-port bus with mouse and speakers

I thought perhaps I need to have a external powered USB bus.

However I also have Knoppix V3.2

Lo and behold I booted with that and sure enough the Microsoft USB Optical Wheel Mouse is recognised and starts no problem................

Can this really be a problem restricted to my SuSE 8.2 distribution I wonder.

Tried that with no better response. I have just sorted it late this afternoon with a powered USB 2.0 hub with 4 slots. So I have removed all 3 USB items, speakers, mouse, and card-reader and the USB 2.0 unit is plugged into the computer and everything else into that external hub.

Result is everything works.....so far.
