Unhappy SuSE 64-bit Hard Drive

Im installing SuSE 9.2 on a new e-machine. The motherboard is an MSI MS-7093. The hard Drive is a 160GB hitachi drive. For some reason when I finish the installation settings and go to format the drive the machine stalls then jumps to 64 percent of "formatting /dev/hda2 as /" then jumps to 100 percent and then freezes. I have tried the install in 32-bit mode and in safe settings install. Still the same problem occurs. What could be the problem. Im in a time crunch to get this project completed. Thanks for any help, David

I suspect that the problem is more likely to be hardware than software. To differentiate between hardware and software problems try booting a live CD and using that to partition and format the Hitachi drive. If that works then something is wrong with the SuSE installer.

If the live CD does not work then the problem is likely to be hardware. One possible hardware problem could be that your Hitachi drive is larger than the BIOS can address. You could test this possibility by making two 80Gb partitions and formatting them.
