SUSE 10 nvidia drivers 3D acceleration?
Hi,
I've installed the nvidia drivers through the online update utility, and 3D acceleration is enabled (so it tells me), but when I try to test this with one of the opengl screensavers it still lags excessively, like it is still using software rendering. Do I need to install opengl or something?
Any help would be appreciated, thanks.
It's a geforce 6600GT by the way.

the online update nvidia driver is always several releases behind. it's best to get them directly from nvidia. they have a good suse specific howto there as well

If you have installed the drivers via Yast (and apparently you have 3d acceleration) check to see that OpenGL is actually using Nvidia. In a console, type "glxinfo | grep rendering" and make sure it says yes. You could also do glxinfo by itself and check to see that Nvidia is in the output somewhere. You should see something like this near the top :
phorem@tux:~> glxinfo
name of display: :0.0
display: :0 screen: 0
direct rendering: Yes
server glx vendor string: NVIDIA Corporation
server glx version string: 1.3
server glx extensions:
GLX_EXT_visual_info, GLX_EXT_visual_rating, GLX_SGIX_fbconfig,
GLX_SGIX_pbuffer, GLX_SGI_video_sync, GLX_SGI_swap_control,
GLX_ARB_multisample, GLX_NV_float_buffer
client glx vendor string: NVIDIA Corporation
client glx version string: 1.3
...........and so on....
If you don't see Nvidia anywhere like above then check /etc/X11/xorg.conf and make sure under the Device section and Driver, it should read "nvidia" and NOT "nv".
I have experienced some of the same problems on my Suse machines. If you continue to have problems, remove all other "xorg" files - including the ones generated by Yast - and leave just "xorg.conf" by itself (edited to your liking of course).
Phorem.

Thanks for posting back with the update mrpringle. FWIW, I likewise would recommend downloading the latest drivers from nVidia directly, as they are typically more current
