Suse 10.3 / HP LJ4L printing problem

I recently set up another linux computer to replace my old
Asus A7V333 which has been a rock but is getting old.

Board is an Asus M2N-MX
SUSE 10.3 64 bit
Printer HP Laserjet 4L

The setup saw the printer and set it up with the normal procedure as it did in earlier versions of SUSE on my other computer. I did not run a test page at that time. Everything looked OK. Below is the configuration copied directly from YAST as it currently exists.

none
/ laserjet4l
Not Shared
Connected As parallel:/dev/lp0
With Spool laserjet4l

Print jobs are sent to the printer and it communicates and begins working. I will get the following on one page:

%!
% License and copyright: SUSE Linux AG - YaST License
% author: Johannes Meixne

The printer will then simply crank out blank pages until I finally get tired of wasting paper and shut it off. It will never print the actual job.

I have removed the printer with Yast, and done a reinstall with Yast... it does exactly the same thing.

This printer has worked flawlessly with earlier versions of SUSE... I have 10 point something on my other machine.

Any suggestions??

Do you have the printer driver installed?
That's the only thing I can think of.

Problem resolved

I discovered that I had to click "do local filtering". Previously I had unclicked that selection as it would not allow a test page to be printed if it was clicked. With it clicked printing seems to operate normally.

I have no idea what this selection means.........

Where did you find this option to perform local filtering? I've been looking through the driver in system settings (i use kubuntu 7.10) and through the options in the print dialog box, and i haven't found anything resembling that.

Thanks for the help.

On SuSE, it's in the "manage your printer" section of YaST. That's where mine is.

Local Filtering

Local Filtering is a setting that in my version of YaST is only available in the printer setup box when you are setting up a new printer. That is to say if your printer is already set up, it is necessary to delete the printer to get the setup box with that option in it.

No doubt there is a non-graphical way to do it....... but I abandoned CPM and DOS years ago, and have no desire to delve into the command line stuff any more than absolutely necessary. I have become spoiled by the great GUI tools like YaST.

There might be a way to do that from your cupsd.conf file.

Also, can you add your printer again but with the different settings and test that and if that one works better then delete the one that gives you trouble?

Will do!!! I've been changing things and installing the driver using the linuxprinting.org instructions instead of using the wizard, obviously to no avail.

Let me try that one more time.

Thanks for the prompt response.
