suse 10.1 and sound question

quick question for u guys when i installed suse 10.1 the sound card was detected and i heard the sound... yay... but now when im in my account i have no sound... I get sound when I start the computer up or turn in down but nothing in between... any suggestions?

also my laptop has ati x1300 video card and i found the ati installer for it. I installed it and it looks great. But the control center for it doesn't work and when i go into the resolution settings in suse it is sayint 800x600 (which it really isn't) and that I'm using vesa... there is another unamed tab which is for ati but it doesn't let me configure anything with it or save that one as active.

any help on either of the problems would be awsome!!!

Install the latest drivers for ATI from www.ati.com The X1xxx series are not supported by any other drivers that come with Suse 10.1, so you'll have to download the ATI driver to get the proper support.

Regarding to the sound question. Perhaps the sound is just muted. Try the following command "aplay /path/to/some/file.wav" to check if the sound works. Note that aplay plays only wav files, or else you'll hear garbage.

did you run "sax2 -m 0=fglrx" to configure your card or did you edit or xorg.conf manually?

just wanted to say that I found out that 1. my sound works with some programs like the banshee player or armok and not others... Is there a plugin for firefox or something that I need to get sound?

My video card seems to be working fine it just isn't configurable or anything...
