Suse 10.0 - When installed and on desktop, the picture is all messed up

After I install Suse 10.0, and I get to my desktop, the picture is all messed up.
It looks like part of the desktop was zoomed in; only showing a section of the desktop.
Also, the picture is all messed up, rainbowed colored, lines all over.

I have:

AMD Althon XP 3200+ (64 bit)
1 gig of RAM (PC3200 - DDR: 400Mhz)
NVIDIA card - GeForce 6600 128 MB (PNY Verto)

I'm able to see the Mandrakelinux 10.1 desktop (which I'm currently on).
So this card has to be compatible, for some linux OS's anyway.

Note: I'm still roughly new to this, so please bear with me, and be pretty detailed when responding.

Also, for MandrakeLinux 10.1, I was able to test the card out. Is that possible through Suse 10.0 during installation? I tried to find a way, but couldn't seem to find it.
I noticed it was set the same way, "vesa; and at 1024x768, like Mandrakelinux is.

Anyway, any help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks in advance.

sounds like the graphics card cant handle the resolution or possible the refresh rate. Try turning those down

It "may be" the refresh rate. It can't be a resolution issue.
My card isn't that old, and can be at 1600x1200, even higher, just never cared for anything higher.
Seeing the refresh rate, it did seem a little higher.
What's a good setting for 1024x768? or does it vary on what card/monitor you have?

it would vary. Try taking it down it to like 60 hz or so. that should work i hope. but it really depends. Most gfx cards should handle that easily

mandrake is set at 70 and is fine. windows may be 70 or 75, I don't know.
I'll see what that default was for Suselinux.
If it was 70, I'll drop down to 60. It may have been 80 or maybe more. It seemed higher than usual.
I'm actually re-downloading it, so it will be a little while longer before I can test it again.

i wouldnt expect a gfx card to do very well at 80 and anyways it doesnt really help much because you cant see that fast. Putting that high s pointless.

refresh rates is one thing i don't know about computers. I usually keep their default settings.
First time installing Suse, I saw the refresh rate, and thought in my mind, that seems high. I can't remember what the setting was. It just seemed high to me. What is the difference between 60 and 70 anyway? Basically how fast it can refresh a page/screen?

Sorry for double posting, but for some reason "edit" isn't working.
Anyway, it's been fixed!
I however, have a second issue now.
My mouse is invisible. I see things being highlighted, I can click on things, I can even see some bouncing icon when you click on certain programs.
However, I see no cursor. It's basically invisible.

I have a Logicteh trackball mouse, USB.

well doesnt seem like it can be any type of hardware issue because you can click. It seems to me as if GNOME or KDE or whatever isnt displaying the cursor. Might want to try an update on that if you can

It sounds like you get the idea about the mouse, but just for the fun of it, I copied/pasted what I put in another forum, something with a little more detail/better worded.

"I fixed the problem with the desktop/color issue. However, my mouse is invisible.
I can click, highlight, and move it around, just don't see anything.
When I click on something, and it shows its busy, I see the picture of it bouncing.
Example: I open up Firefox, and see a tiny firefox icon bouncing, that being where my cursor is, being I'm controlling it. then it disappears."

What sort of update? Would it be the update during installation? If so, I could do that. I bypassed it before because of how long it takes, and I really just wanted to be sure I fixed the problem.
Why take up so much extra time if the desktop is still bad, know what I mean?

Well anyway, where should I go about getting this update? I should be able to navigate well without the mouse, lol.

Here's the packages for KDE 3.5.1 for SuSe 10.0
First remove all the packages with the same name that is already installed from a TTY and then install the new ones and it should work.

ftp://ftp.scarlet.be/pub/kde/stable/...uSE/ix86/10.0/

When you're talking about removing the old ones and installing the new ones, you mean overwritting?
"Old file with same name exist, overwrite?"

I'm not sure with SuSe but in Slackware i first removed all KDE packages and then installed the new ones.
And not overwriting.
