SUSE 10.0 Trouble controlling/recording from soundcard

Hello all,

the soundcard on my notebook running SUSE 10.0 is giving me a headache. (I'm by no means a Linux expert, but usually some extensive googling leads me to a solution, or in the worst case to an insight to why I won't be able to solve the problem. This time I'm running in circles.)

The good news: YAST did recognize the card during system install, and it does play sound :)

But in alsamixer, none of the channels in the "capture" view has a slider, except for "IEC958 P" (don't even know what that is for) and "Capture" - this is not what it's supposed to look like, or is it?

I suppose that this might be a reason why I can't seem to find a mixer setting that allows me to use the card e.g. with a VoIP software like kphone or linphone. In alsamixer, I can toggle capture on and off for the "mic" channel, but this alone is not sufficient to get a signal from the microphone. If I additionally toggle capture on for the "capture" channel, and move the "mic" slider in the "playback" (!) tab up, I get a signal from the microphone. But this causes also the PCM signal to be recorded, thus sending a loud echo of their own voice back to whomever I'm telephoning via kphone or linphone.

The card should work correctly in full duplex, as I have tested it with a different OS :)

Alsamixer reports the card as
Card: SiS SI7012
Chip: Realtek ALC203 rev 0

I'd be very very thankful for any hint that could lead me ultimately to a solution of this puzzle. If I need to post some additional info, just let me know.

Hi Mate,

I have been pondering over the same problem as well. With Suse10.0, the sound card works fine except for capture. With KRecord opening the record level shows zip - even the background shows through! The only way I have been able to get a recording to work is to use qaRecord - clicking the capture box shows the level meter responding and recording works fine. My card is a Cmedia. Interestingly the capture works fine when booted into Mandriva. Still scratching my head on this one as well.
